National meeting of BET for Romania

In the period of 1 – 4 June 2010, the LIFE EX-TRA project organized the first BET meeting on national level for Romania.

The BET – Bear Emergency Team in Romania is targeting a population of more than 5000 bears distributed on Carpathian Mountains range. Within last 10 years, there were more than 350 interventions on bears all over Romanian territory. In such circumstances, the initiative of LIFE EX-TRA to set up a national BET was welcomed by the participants at the meeting. Based on the meeting discussions, a draft of the BET protocol for Romania was elaborated. This protocol endorsed by the authorities will be the working document for all BET members in the country.
The national meeting included a training session regarding brown bear immobilization, identification of problem bears, identification o damages caused by large carnivores and experiences sharing.
The training team was formed by Djuro Huber and Josip Kusak from Croatia and George Sarbu and Ioan Brumar from Romania.
Next steps for BET in Romania: BET protocol endorsed by the authorities and setting up official BET groups for all parts of Romania where bears are present.
