  1. Human dimensions and stakeholder analysis: the architecture of research

 

The Report "Large carnivores between consensus and conflict in the Apennine Parks" is located within the Project LIFE + EX-TRA entitled: "Improving the Conditions for big carnivore conservation: a transfer of best practices ”.  The Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park (PNGSML) is Project Leader with Italian and international partnerships (Sibillini Mountain National Park, PNMS; Tosco – Emiliano Apennine National Park, PNATE). The Report is the second of the Human Dimension of big carnivores and deals with what is commonly called a stakeholders analysis.

Three meetings with stakeholders have been carried out in Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. To promote such a participatory meetings means to take charge of the whole progess, starting from the involvement of the different actors to take them “into the room”, as specialists say.

Agrienvironment measures concerning bear damages

 

In the new Greek Rural Development Programme for the period 2007-2013 some actions concerning wildlife and especially brown bear conservation needs, have been included: “Promotion of agricultural practices for wildlife protection” (Measure 214), Electric fence purchase and installationand Livestock guarding dogs purchase” (Measure 216, Actions 1.1 and 1.2 respectively).

Smolyan region is located in the Rodopi Mountains in South Bulgaria. In this area there are over 200 settlements randomly distributed on about 2,700 km2 of bear habitat. The region is inhabited by round 100,000 persons, of which about half lives in towns like Smolyan (32,000), Devin, Chepelare, Madan (5,000-10,000).
